Public lecture: What’s is Going On? Russia’s War with Reality’. Dr Peter Lowe, Senior Lecturer in English Literature (Bader College) is giving a public lecture on Wednesday 8 November from 7 to 8.30pm in The Conference Room at Herstmonceux Castle drawing on examples of Russian propaganda from the 1930s onwards. The talk explores how images and texts are manipulated to fit the needs of the country’s rulers and how Russians have become used to accepting as ‘truths’ from their government, things that are frequently at odds with reality. As the attritional war in Ukraine is fought with information and propaganda as much as it is with weaponry, what can Russia’s past tell us about how long its populace might be prepared to accept the Kremlin’s view of reality or, indeed, news of the country’s defeat?
Dr Peter Lowe is Senior Lecturer in English at Bader College. A regular reviewer for Russian Art and Culture. His work has also appeared in the New York Review of Books, The Modernist and the blog for Pushkin House, the Russian cultural centre in London.
