The centrepiece of this concert is Schumann’s riotously imaginative work, Carnaval. Its 21 short movements vividly depict a colourful cast of masked partygoers, including characters from Italian street theatre, Schumann’s then fiancée, his future wife Clara and the composer himself. William Hancox will use the big screen both to talk us through the piece and to illustrate his performance. The programme will also include two evergreen keyboard favourites, Bach’s Italian Concerto and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.
