Everyone is invited to a free historical talk at 7.30pm for 8pm start. The guest speaker will be local historian Stephen Ziegler who will cover: A pre-historic outline of this part of Sussex, leading to its recorded history, including the Saxon and Norman (the Normans were the main builders of deer parks after 1066), what is a deer park and why were they built, Hellingly Park in recorded history. Who owned the land on which it was constructed, The Pelham influence, Emparking the park in 1532, The nearby iron industry and its impart, Murder most foul near the deer park, The decline of deer parks and the iron industry in the 18th Century, the sale of Park Wood and its owners, the sale of the deer park leading to the building of Hellingly Hospital and finally, the 2nd World War, the Canadians and the Secret Army Hellingly Patrol in Park Wood.
